Today, the clothing industry is one of the largest contributors to pollution the world over. The fashion industry has a major waste problem, as is well known. That means lots of clothes made, worn and tossed, producing lots of waste. But this is where recycled elastane can come to the rescue! Not only do we reduce our carbon footprint by using recycled materials instead of creating new things. This means we can help keep our planet clean and healthy. The really good news is that recycled elastane performs just as effectively as virgin elastane. So you don’t need to compromise on quality to be eco-friendly!
It takes less energy: Creating new elastane is energy-intensive work, which can cause damage to our planet. But recycling elastane consumes less energy and curbs pollution.
Just as good as new: Recycled elastane is still elastic, says Roxie Horan, sustainability lead for denim manufacturer Cone Denim, and it performs just like new elastane. You wont notice any difference on how it feels or how it works!
Now you may be wondering how recycled fabric is actually produced. Well, it begins with clothing that people no longer want. When these clothes are recycled, they get torn up into tiny pieces known as fibers. These fibers can be spun into new threads, from which new cloth can be manufactured. Typically, elastane fibers are blended with other fiber types, such as nylon or polyester, which are used in clothing production to ensure the fabric is stretchy and comfortable.
As touched on before, it only makes sense to look at recycled elastane in a fashion sense when upholding levels of waste and helping to make a difference in our environment. Using recycled materials means that we are not having to make new ones, which brings down the total carbon footprint of producing clothes. This is significant because less carbon footprint equals less pollution in our air and water.” Also, recycling such old clothes is a good thing which also saves them from going in landfills. The country’s landfills can fill up faster than you think, and when clothes break down they can emit harmful gases into the atmosphere, which is harmful to us all.
